Homeopathy references:

For the history of how Homeopathy saved us from the bloodletting
treatments and later was disfranchised by ‘scientific medicine’
see parts of the following:

The Turning Point, Fritjof Capra (in print)
Planet Medicine, Richard Grossinger
Social Transformation of American Medicine, Paul Starr (in print)

for details of Homeopathic medicine see:
Health & Healing, Andrew Weil (very readable, in print)
Science of Homeopathy, George Vithoulkas

Antibiotics and the pill

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

A friend recently told me that taking antibiotics interferes with the normal
functioning of birth control pills.  Can anyone with a bit more knowledge
comment on this?

Is the human body sterile?

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

Recently in an Advanced First Aid class we were discussing contusions
(bruises), and were told that serious contusions can become infected
even if there is no external bleeding, leading to septic shock and
possibly even death. While I do not doubt this possibility, the reason
given did not jive with what I understand about the human body.

The instructor told us that there are bacteria circulating throughout
the body all the time, ayet they are kept in check by the immune system.
However, when blood pools internally in tissues such as would be the
case with a serious contusion, these bacteria can grow there and get a
foothold, multiplying and causing serious illness or death.

I understood the body tissues to be essentially sterile most of the
time, with the exception of tissue exposed to the external environment
(like skin), and the digestive tract (mouth to anus). For example, the
blood flowing in arteries and veins is essentially sterile, and muscle
tissue, unless compromised by laceration, is sterile.

Am I right or wrong? If right, how does an internally bleeding injury
like a serious contusion become infected?

Muscular Dystrophy

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

Hello,
I am looking for information on Muscular Dystrophy in particular the
Duschenne Type of dystrophy. I would like to know about the causes the
cure and the prevention of the dystrophy. I would appreciate it if
someone could send me e-mail or post it on the net, about where I could
get the information.

There is a Muscular Dystrophy society in Britain, is there a similar
organization like that in USA? Could someone send me their mailing
address or the phone number if such a organization does exist.

thanks

Tendonitis

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

I have tendonitis in my left shoulder — have had for a long time.  It
stays about the same, although I have stopped working out for the
last 3-4 months.

Questions:

1) What are the treatments?  Ranging, I understand, from rest to
   cortisone injections to surgery.

2) How do I prevent re-occurance, once I have been "cured"  — is
Tendonitis treated with surgery less likely to re-occur than if
just treated by rest or injection?

3) Is it likely to be a lifelong problem for me now?

Smoking Cessation

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

I understand that there is a device which is metal and attaches to the ear and
is to an electric source (like a TENS unit) which helps persons get off drugs,
but is also useful for a person trying to quit smoking.  I read that the
response is tremendous and one of best ways to quit and fastest, etc. My
husband has been trying to stop smoking and I would like to find a clinic in
the Dayton or sourth South Ohio area which uses this technique or somewhere
where an individual can obtain this unit and metal clips for individual
at-home use.

Has anyone out there tried this method or known someone who has used this
method? What were the success rates … any problems, etc.

Additionally if you have problems with ‘Dry Eye’ GP’s (gas permeable) lens are
actually better tolerated than soft lens.  Regardless of the astigmatism you
mention above.

Medical Transcriptionists

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

I was wondering if anyone knew of any "medical transciptionists’ societies or
agencies" that serve as a source of information and resources for
transcriptionists to benefit from.  I often wish I had more resources from
which to purchase books and charts, for instance.  Also, belonging to an
organization where you have support of others in your field is a plus.  Any
information would be helpful.  Also, if anyone can tell me a good source from
which to purchase books and other medical information to help us in our job,
it would be appreciated.

Thank you.
