Vitamin K

Does anyone know what Vitamin K is?  I think it’s psycho-active.

"Vitamin K" is the street name for the injectable anesthetic
ketamine, a close chemical and pharmacological relative of
phencyclidine (PCP or "angel dust").  It is popular recreationally
for its propensity to produce a dream state filled with
    vivid images.

"Surely You’re Joking Mr. Feynmann" has an anecdote of the
physicist’s experiments with isolation tanks and ketamine.

By some strange coincidence, I just learned about vitamin K last night.
My wife will be having a child soon, so we are attending childbirth
classes together.  Vitamin K is injected into newborn babies thigh’s
before they are two hours old.  Under normal circumstances, it is produced
by your intestine.  It is used by the body to clot blood.  As far as I
know, it doesn’t have any psychoactive properties.  If it does – all those
babies must get a wild welcome to the world ;^)

Vitamin K is needed for the synthesis of many key coagulation factors.
Without it you would have bleeding problems.

I don’t think it does.  I think one of the things it does is to aid in
the clotting of blood.  I had a nosebleed once that did not stop, and
at the hospital they gave me a needleful in the butt (it did the trick).
It is found in green leafy stuff (lettuce etc) and I had not eaten any
at the time for quite some time.  Sorry to rain on your parade!

It is a vetinary anesthetic.  People who use animals in labs sometimes
have access to it.  It is legal, maybe you could make up a company and
order it.  I forget if you can smoke it; usually its injected
intramuscularly I believe.  You *better* research this one *real* well
though or you’ll have a pretty damn nasty and scary time.  Its in the
same chemical and pharmacological family as PCP.

Not sure what it is but it used to be prescribed alot to people
who had trouble getting their blood to clot.  Prescribed to my
mother during pregnancy to avoid delivery problems.  Hmmmmm,
    maybe that’s my problem……

It is my understanding that there are two substances referred to as ‘vitamin
K.’  One is actually a vitamin, and it plays a part in blood clotting.  The
other is actually better referred to as ketamine–see John Lilly’s ‘The
Scientist’–what he refers to as Vitamin K is actually ketamine, a
    psychoactive drug.

Sigh.  This seems to need repeated clarification.  "Vitamin
K" is two different things.  First, there is a real vitamin,
called K for Koagulation (German), which helps blood
coagulate and is normally produced by bacteria in the
digestive tract.  I didn’t know they injected into babies.

Then, there is ketamine, jokingly called "Vitamin K"
by John Lilly (and perhaps others first).  This is
used as a tranquillizer for horses but has serious
psychoactive effects on people, as described in Lilly’s
    books.

No. It’s an abbreviation for Koagulation (really, it is).
Vitamin K is a cofactor that makes blood clotting components active. Not
enough vitamin K (or too much Warfarin, a vitamin K antagonist – oh, and
despite the belicose name, Warfarin is not some chemical weapon – it
stands for Wisconsin Agricultural Research Foundation – W.A.R.F.) and you
bleed, very much like a hemophiliac.

The psycho-active bit probably refers to Vitamins C,V, and Q,
which are sometimes code names for Caffeine, Valium, and Quaaludes.
(That C is already used is unfortunate.)

True, but there’s something ELSE, ketamine, which is
also called vitamin K (in a cutesy slang sort of manner)
by, e.g., John Lilly in his book The Center of the Cyclone.
    This is apparently *very* psychoactive.

This whole discussion has occured here already not too
long ago, so I suggest interested parties dig into the
    archives.

I was after Ketamine.  The posting said `psyco-active’.  Now
    I do remember Feynman’s Ketamine stories in `Surely You’re Joking…’.

The vitamin `Vitamin K’ is something else entirely.
